But, but, but...

Another of the many prominent (though closeted) Republican homosexuals makes the news. The Dope wishes the best for the happy couple.

Arthur J. Finkelstein, a prominent Republican consultant who has directed a series of hard-edged political campaigns to elect conservatives in the United States and Israel over the last 25 years, said Friday that he had married his male partner in a civil ceremony at his home in Massachusetts.

Mr. Finkelstein, 59, who has made a practice of defeating Democrats by trying to demonize them as liberal, said in a brief interview that he had married his partner of 40 years to ensure that the couple had the same benefits available to married heterosexual couples.

Mr. Finkelstein has been allied over the years with Republicans who have fiercely opposed gay rights measures, including former Senator Jesse Helms of North Carolina, and has been the subject of attacks by gay rights activists who have accused him of hypocrisy.

None of Mr. Finkelstein's better-known political clients, among them Gov. George E. Pataki of New York and former Senator Alfonse M. D'Amato of New York, attended...

Details of Mr. Finkelstein's relationship have appeared in regular news accounts over the years, as they did in the Boston Magazine article, which reported that Mr. Finkelstein lived with his partner and two children in Ipswich, Mass.
Finkelstein has been one of the, if not the, top Republican stategists for decades.

This guy reminds me of Roy Cohn, the great commie bashing attorney who worked for Sen Joe McCarthy who was a flamer himself. James Wood played him in the movie "Citizen Cohn" great flick.

Yep, old Roy will always be remembered as perhaps the first of the prominent self-hating gay people who devoted their lives to the promotion of the far right who loathed people like themeselves. It's a very puzzling phenomena, to say the least.

Another interesting case involves "B-1 Bob" Dornan, the right wing lunatic and former Rep from California, who's chief aide for many years, a guy who he'd mentored from childhood and was almost part of the family, was gay.

It's a pretty interesting story, and I've seen the aide on TV explaining what the scene was like when he came out to Bob. I guess Bob was pretty cool about it, but in public, he of course reverted to rank hypocrisy and dropped him like a hot rock.

The bottom line is that many of the conservative leaders are not anti-gay so much as they're just cynically taking advantage of, and fanning the flames of, the rubes prejudices and fears for their own political gain. After all, take away the hate vote and the Repubs are nowhere.

Maybe... I posted a few times on the Jeff Gannon/John Guckert gay escort scandal a couple months ago. (Here, here, and here)

The story is still going on. As a matter of fact, there was a very contentious and tense panel at the National Press Club just yesterday on C-Span. The panel had raised all sorts of protests because it was supposed to be on just who is a journalist and the role of bloggers as a news outlet.
And these idiots had Gannon/Guckert up there as a blogger because he now has a blog. The guy is a cock-headed man-whore who is so utterly stupid that at one point he actually said, "One could hardly say that Fox news is conservative." to which the normally staid audience howled in laughter.
He refused to address his pimping himself out to gay clients, nor did he have much to say about how he got White House press credentials using a fake name and representing Talon News, an organization with no paid subscriptions run by a Texas Republican operative.
The story, of course, was under-covered in the mainstream press.
Can you IMAGINE what would have happened had this happened while Clinton was in the White House? They'd STILL be having hearings about it!
But Gannon continues to say he's a victim of those mean liberals. No matter that he sometimes just copied and pasted RNC memos and printed it as "news", or why he was given a day pass to the White House for over two years under a false name when other reporters were unable to get one. Or who pulled the strings to get him into the press room, or why Scotty McClellan, the liar in chief managed to call on him every time he was about to have to answer an uncomfortable question.
The whole thing is an amazing story and if you want to read all about it on the blog that broke the story, go here. (caution, graphic images.)
