Wright had the right stuff

Unofficial results show that Judge Vicki Wright has defied expectations and scored a come from behind victory in the 3rd District Appellate Court judicial election. Odds on favorite Lance Peterson actually came in third behind Wright and candidate Tom O'Neal.

This may be the upset of the night.

Unofficial results posted by the Chicago Tribune have it:

Vicki Wright 26,298 or 39.06%
Tom O'Neal 22,010 or 32.69%
Lance Peterson 19,013 or 28.24%

Congratulations to Judge Wright on her win.

She now is expected to face a very tough general election against a candidate from Will County.

In related news... two readers scored by predicting Wright would pull in 40%, "Political Geek", and the always astute "Dissenter".

"UnionD" just missed scoring again with their prediction of 38%

Interestingly, 15/3/06 12:48, Anonymous was the lowest prediction for Peterson and came in closest by guessing 28%, nearly nailing the actual result. The same person was also the highest predictor for O'Neal and was closest there as well, though still was below O'Neal's actual percentage. Their prediction was 30% compared to O'Neals showing of 32.69%

Congratulations and the warm glow of victory go out to the winners.

You're wrong about this race, Lance Peterson never had a lead because there was no polling.
Voters were largely ignorant of these three candidates, and Ms. Wright benefited greatly from being the only woman in the race (see Zinga) against two men and at the top of the ballot.

90% of the electorate doesn't pay any attention to judicial candidates.

Good luck to Judge Wright in what will be a very difficult race. She'll have to raise at least $500,000 to win.

How can you state that I'm "wrong" about Peterson??

First of all, where did you read that Peterson had some "lead"?

It's a fact that the vast majority of commenters, word on the street, as well as those who predicted this race had Peterson out in front. I think that makes him the favorite.

Most people may not pay attention to judicial races, but the result was certainly a surprise to many who do.

As much as I want more women in office, she is not the wright one. She worked hard and gets her due but Tom was the better candidate of the three.

I have talked at length to them all - wright, I met early on a year ago. Nice person, but kinda wierd in a scarey way. I think the Republicans will rip her to shreds.

If she doesn't get money for mailers, it's bye bye to that seat for the Dems.

ahh gee whiz, golly gee and Jiminy Christmas!!! She won (I gave up cussing for Lent) give her a break. Mr O'Neal and Judge Peterson were and are great, intelligent and hard working men.I feel for them, but don't begrudge Vicki her victory.
