The people have spoken.

Boland has not done himself any favors. From my understanding this will be Bolands last term as he is afraid of the Jacobs machine.

I knew the Sherrif race would be close but still believed that Grchan would win in the end. That was a surprise.

Best moment was watching Mike Jacobs praise Paul Rumler, and having the negativity of this primary end. Unity is the buzzword. Way go to both campaigns and candidates!

What ever happened to candidates congratulating their opponent at the end of the fight? Conceding the election? Used to be the norm but not seen often anymore.

I think that because of lower voter turnout, Huff won. The people really wanted Grchan but didn't get out to vote because they thought he had it in the bag.

Anon above, that may well be true, but it didn't seem that Grchan himself ran a very vigorous campaign, at least not from my perspective.

I will refer back to my New Year's predictions.

1. I predicted Karen Yarbrough would beat Chris Welch 2:1. She won almost 3:1.

2. I predicted Yarbrough would beat Eugene Moore 54:46 for Proviso Township Democratic Committeeman. She won 59:41.

3. I predicated Eisendrath would get at least 34% of the vote. He only got 30%.

If the White Sox win the division, the Green candidate for gov gets 3% of the vote or more and Cheney isn't the VP at the end of the year, I'm going to be looking brilliant.

The biggest surprise was that a 26-year-old unknown garnered 44% of the vote against the hand-picked successor backed by the Rock Island County machine. The worst moment in the campaign was the moment we all discovered that an organization sent out questionnaires to candidates and based on a candidate's failure to return the questionnaire, determined that the candidate's position on a single issue was opposite of the organization's position and consequently mounted a campaign to broadcast the candidate's position - a position totally fabricated by the organization.

Big kudos to Rock Island Dem Tom Benson for running in the 17th congressional district. Good job, Tom, you're almost at 40%.

Jacobs campaign mgr, Pat O'Brien, held his own despite a Jacobs election night number that didn't quite meet expectations.

Meet expectations. It beat the consensus that was from the inside Dope. These people are sharp cookies. Jacobs beat the street.

I agree with anon about the election call that is to be made to the winner at the end of the night.

That practice seems to be going away and it's sad because making that call shows great class and respect for the process.

I have personally seen the call made both to winners and by candidates upon defeat. It's really hard to pick up the phone and congratulate the person who has the job you spilled your guts for too......but you are a far better person if you do make that phone call in the end.

The people who don't do this when they loose are not aware of the old school rules or don't care and it's a shame.

Did Huff get a call?

Did Jacobs get a call?

I'd be curious to see if the campaigns that lost care to comment on that or not.

Anon 12:28... Jacobs beat the predicted mean by only 1 point. Not that great.

At 3/23/2006 2:36 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Not that bad either.

You can win by one vote and that still makes you the winner.

I understand that Rumler made the call today. I think that this will go along way to help bring the party together.

Congratulations go out to both Rumler and Jacobs.

You're a regular Bob Hopeless.

Wow... that was a real zinger.

Then you weren't looking hard enough.. or looking for the wrong person. I was there. I'm always there.

Were you at Rumlers party also. Or are you one of those who waits till its over and only goes to the winners. And says I was with you from the begining.

Now that it's all over, can someone verify once and for all what help Boland was giving Rumler. This was skirted earlier in the primary (on this blog and others). After Boland came out the day before election saying he didn't endorse Jacobs I wonder what his position with Rumler was exactly. Working behind the scenes? Mentoring him in other ways? Or staying out of it entirely? Inquiring minds...

At 3/24/2006 10:31 AM, Blogger The Inside Dope said...

Something tells me that Boland isn't going to jump on here and volunteer that information.

And I very much doubt the few people who might know are either.

So I assume that's just a rhetorical question meant to plant suspicion.

I smell a "smear Boland" campaign already.

Didn't even come up for air before switching from dirt about Rumler to dirt about Boland.

At 3/24/2006 10:51 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No I just seriously wondered after the thing in the paper. It's not a smear campaign as I am not a politician.

At 3/24/2006 11:03 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You are to paranoid Dope. Who are you accusing of smearing Boland. Rumler, Jacobs, OBrien, Harrington, Zinga. Who are you pointing fingers at. This seems like a smear in itself to me. I think this is a legit question.

Paranoid with good reason. Bear in mind that you only see a fraction of the comments I receive. Most of them are too over the line to post.

A lot of them are focusing on Boland and so I detected a trend, and, based on reading hundreds if not thousands of comments from some of these folks, I felt I had good reason to suspect that a campaign to get back at Boland was underway.

I hope I'm wrong.

Thank you Mr. Rumler and MR. Benson for your great efforts. You provided voters a wonderful alternative.

Congradulations Mr. Jacobs, Mr. Huff, and Ms. Wright. You all had big battles. Special congradulations to Mr. Huff. Beating a four-term incumbant is no easy task. Democrates must now unite behind each winner and seal the deal on November 7th. GO DEMS!

Hey dopey,

I was at Mike's party...I didn't see you there...and I know you wouldn't miss FREE alcohol. Got a little drinking problem I hear...too bad. That explains your stupid comments. DORK !!!

p.s.- I'm still that big guy in the corner, drinking a beer, at all of the democratic fundraisers...come see me...I got somethin' for ya !!!!!!

Inside dope I don't believe you are Paranoid with good reason. I don't believe that we only see a fraction of the comments I receive. I don't believe that most of them are too over the line to post.
What are you hiding. We are adults and can read what we want and make of it what we will. Are you protecting us or trying to fool us. I presume the later.

These greta leaders are at the top of their games. It is great that the party is starting to heal.

I must congratulate Mr. Jacobs for beating a great candidate with a bright future 56-44. Very impressive win. I am glad that You and Rumler are working together to help unify the party for the tough General election for Jacobs, Boland, and most importantly Lane Evans.

Anon 22:28

I'll file your complaint along with all those pounding on me for not deleting more comments than I do and demanding that I be a more "responsible gatekeeper".

As far as "sore winners" I'd direct your attention to Anon 19:39 above... a comment I'd dumped but published in your honor.

And that's just a taste of the crap I get daily.

Here's another:

"What?! No comments from the dope since the 11th. Hmmm...is that because your time on this planet has run out? You, are sorry...this blog, is sorry...and MIKE JACOBS is THE Senator of the 36th District. Sorry Paul, Sorry Dope, Sorry Boland...oh wait, you guys already knew you were SORRY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "

and another from the same person,

"Guess what? Mike Boland is an IDIOT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "

And another...

"Bumler, Boland, Beydler...that's alot of "B's"...weird...what else starts with "B"? Oh that's right...BUTT !!"

That's just the tip of the iceberg. There's dozens more.

Trust me, if they're dumped, they're dumped for a good reason.
