I died because of a cartoon

PESHAWAR, Pakistan - Gunfire and rioting erupted Wednesday as tens of thousands of people took to the streets in Pakistan's third straight day of violent protests over the Prophet Muhammad cartoons. Three people were killed, including an 8-year-old boy.
Excuse me, but is this not one of the stupidest, most horrid, ridiculous reasons to kill or be killed, right up there with the war in Iraq? (of which this is a by-product)

It sure doesn't cover the Muslim population in glory, though it's apparently due to the efforts of a few zealots to grasp at something to stir up the faithful.

Sort of like the Shiavo case.

This brings up the larger, indisputable fact that the invasion of Iraq was literally a gift from heaven for Osama bin Laden.

For a decade he'd been stating that the United States and the west would invade any Muslim country at will to defend Israel, would sully and demean Islam, would torture and kill Muslim men, women, and children, would attempt to steal their oil and resources, etc.

Bush and his cronies came along and validated everything bin Laden had been saying, thus elevating him and his message far beyond anything it may have achieved otherwise.

Bottom line? Bush handed bin Laden everything he wanted on a silver platter.
Where Bush I was smart enough to avoid causing essentially a world war or clash of civilizations, Junior and his band of ideologues were far too stupid, too short-sighted, and too pumped up and impressed with our military might to resist.

So for reasons which never existed, Bush invaded and occupies a Muslim country and by doing so, destabilizes the world, inflames Muslims around the world, increases the number of those sworn to oppose and attack the U.S. exponentially, and sets up some sort of holy war scnenario, and in doing so, plunges the U.S. economy into nearly insurmountable debt while continuing to insist that revenue be cut by trillions in order to save milliionaires money.

And people think he's the one keeping us "safe"?

It also doesn't help when put democracy on a pedestal and then contradict ourselves. They hold elections in Iraq and Afghanistan and we get all warm and fuzzy. Palestinians have an election and we think about ways of destabilizing them because we don't like who they elected. The same politicians who dislike Islamist political movements so much are some of the same ones who kowtow to the Christian right here in the US.

It would be swell if we practiced a bit of what we preached to the rest of the world. That might be a step in the right direction.

tiz, love the comment.

The US gov't makes a huge deal internationally about democracy, democracy, democracy. That works for us; we've got a history and culture that supports it.

What we ought to be "selling" is respect for basic human rights - life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Do that and we don't give a fig if you have a king or a iman or town square meetings.
