Rumler gains two endorsements

As noted by John Beydler, The Paul Rumler for Senate campaign has announced two endorsements in a statement sent to "The Passing Parade".
ROCK ISLAND - Paul Rumler (D-Rock Island) announces the following two endorsements that he received for the March 21, 2006 Primary Election.

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 371 has given their full endorsement to Paul Rumler's candidacy for State Senate in the 2006 Democratic Primary Election. "I am honored to receive the Teamsters' endorsement. I look forward to working together with the hard working families in Illinois' 36th Legislative District to help revitalize our communities," said Paul Rumler.

The Illinois Committee for Honest Government has endorsed Paul Rumler's candidacy for State Senate in the 2006 Democratic Primary Election. The Illinois Committee for Honest Government was formed in 1986 to promote responsiveness in all levels and branches of the government. "Our evaluation of Paul Rumler's credentials and background shows that he is clearly worthy of our support," said Randall Sherman, Secretary/Treasurer for the Illinois Committee for Honest Government. "We believe that Paul Rumler has the potential to become an outstanding member of the Illinois General Assembly."

Congrats Paul, keep up the good work. I think we are seeing the Rumler campaign gaining a lot of momentum with this one.

It looks like Paul Rummler is poised to win this race. Jacobs' camp looks to be in full-scale panic.

Go Paul, go!

Jacobs himself appears to be an insufferable empty suit, born on third base and thinking he hit a triple, who thinks he deserves to be senator because... well, just because. There's no "there" there.

And his supporters, as evidenced by their little games here and elsewhere, are a band of insufferable clods who will stoop to any depth to try to promote their guy or smear his rivals. A prime example of dim-witted antiquated thug politics at it's best. The politics of the past, more of the same.

I for one wouldn't be disappointed at all if Rumler became our new senator, even though he's even more of a light-weight than Jacobs. At least one gets the impression that there's a brain in there somewhere with Rumler, and that he takes the business of governance with some sort of seriousness, which Jacobs and his supporters here seems to scoff at.

When you ask the question which is ready for prime-time, the answer would be close, with Rumler edging Jacobs out.

C-student types may go over well, and look what we've gotten from Bush, but I personally prefer a guy who isn't jaded and who doesn't look at politics as some big game to play with hundreds of thousands of other people's money.

Will Rumler win? I wouldn't bet on it, but who knows?

But I for one sure wouldn't be disappointed if he did.

More power to you, kid.

Jacobs has already been endorsed by the QC Federation of Labor and the QC Building Trades Council.
Those two represent about 90% of the labor unions in the area.

It's undeniable that Jacobs has labor in his pocket. After all, despite differences with him, they want to bet on the horse they feel will win.
Jacobs has enormous advantages over Rumler in every measurable area.
This isn't really breaking news.

Anon 22:27.

"Cultural Elite" is a handy word given to the ignorant by folks like Rush Limbaugh to try to increase their natural resentment of anyone who actually reads above a 5th grade level.

And Bush and Reagan? Wow. Two disasters. No wonder you want to associate Jacobs with them.

Try Andrew Jackson and Harry S. Trumam.

By the way Doper, when did you become such a snob?

Try Jackson and Truman for what?

Luckily I realize that neither graduated from college. But what's your point? Some of the smartest people I know don't have a degree.

But I'm sure Jackson and Truman could read and were intellectually curious.

I'm not a snob, I just have a hard time tolerating ignorant people who seem to be proud of their ignorance.

Could never really figure that one out.

Don't know if this is true but heard Jacobs is having trouble with the local UAW & that's why his poll mentioned his problems with labor. May be worth checking out.

At 2/14/2006 1:02 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's hard to say how you'd check something like that out, short of asking a union official flat out.

Word is that Jacobs' mouth has caused friction between himself and labor, but no doubt, they'll hold their nose and endorse him.

Bottom line? Jacobs gets all the usual labor endorsements, gets all the usual donations, buys all the usual signs, has all the usual people out walking precincts for him, and we get the usual senator.

But... there's no guarantees.... stranger things have happened.

Dope, I hate to disagree, but I think that this is huge news. Not just the fact that Rumler took a Union away from Mikey (because it's no secret that nobody is crazy about Jacobs), but the fact that the Teamsters had the b*lls to stand up and be counted. So far the Unions have been going against their better judgment and betting on the horse that they think will win, not the best candidate. It appears that the Teamsters are throwing their support behind who they feel is the best candidate. Do they feel that they might have the winning horse as well?? Perhaps.

Anyway Dope, this is certainly news. How often do people in our society fail to step out and do what is right? The Teamsters showed that they're not scared of Mikey and his blogging wrath.

Who is? I hope no one.

But you make good points. People tend to take the safe path, even against their own better judgement and also tend to fear real or perceived power, sometimes justifiably.

But I believe that there's a time when enough is enough, you have to find some way to take a risk and say or do what needs to be said or done.

Little gets accomplished without taking some risks.

To suggest that the Unions are afraid of Mike Jacobs shows that Rumler is out of touch. By not living here untill 4 months ago is evident. If he had he would know that the good honest hard working union members of this community have been a force that has helped shape the Illinois Quad City. To say otherwise is to disrespect the unions that have been such a big part of this community.

At 2/14/2006 9:16 AM, Blogger The Inside Dope said...

I allowed the above comment to be posted against my better judgement, but primarily because it is a nearly textbook example of the "straw man" argument.

Jacobs supporters, and yes, unfortunately, they're nearly always Jacobs supporters, are simply incapable of writing one single comment without resorting to at least one straw man argument, if not several.

A straw man argument is where you INVENT a statement, belief, attitude, or something similar, attribute it to your opponent, and then argue against it.

It amounts to essentially arguing against yourself, as you're the one who erects the "straw man" in order to knock it down.

This is done when the person making the argument is unable to argue the facts as they find them. So instead they make up facts which makes it easier for them to argue against.

Here's the ones they used in the above.

The made up "straw men":

1. At no time anywhere that I'm aware of did Rumler "suggest" that the unions are afraid of Mike Jacobs. If so, where and when?

2. No one has said, let alone Rumler, that union members haven't "been a force" blah, blah, in the community.

Then the last sentence, the part that makes it so classic.

Their argument is, quote, "To say otherwise is to disrespect the unions that have been such a big part of this community."

Nice attempt at constructing a typical PR type sentence with all the stale old adjectives strung together, by the way.

But here we have them INVENTING something out of thin air, putting the invented words in Rumler's mouth, and then saying that it's a slap in the face to hard working men and women.

But the fact remains that their main point is reserved for arguing against a statement or view, WHICH NO ONE HAS EVER SAID OR INFERRED, NOR DOES ANYONE BELIEVE.

Yet they use it to try to suggest that Rumler was the source.

See how they work? You probably can spot it by now, but this one is a classic of the dishonest tactic.

Don't have any leg to stand on? Then MAKE ONE UP, put words or beliefs in your opponent's mouth, and then condemn them.

Neat trick, but it looks REALLY stupid once people are on to it.

What about your dog? You left him out of the picture.

And did you actually poll your kids to get their opinion regarding their views on where Rumler worked the last couple years and it's relation to whether he'd be a capable representitive?

Did the goldfish put in it's two cents too?

(sheesh!)

Seriously, support Jacobs all you want, but can't you do so without making sh&t up??

If you have a problem with Rumler working in D.C. ... fine. But don't tack on all that campaign flier cow plop to everything you try to sell here.

Your comments would have a lot better chance of actually being read.

At 2/14/2006 10:18 AM, Blogger The Inside Dope said...

OK... here's the difference.

The first comment you point to doesn't put words in Jacobs' mouth.

Your comment puts someone else's words in Rumler's mouth.

Can you grasp how that's different?

Your wrote: "To suggest that the Unions are afraid of Mike Jacobs shows that Rumler is out of touch."

How does that makes sense? One person suggests something and you put it on Rumler?

That stuff doesn't fly.

You can say that in your opinion, the commenter who actually made the statement is out of touch, but don't try to put one person's remarks onto another.

But really folks, it's NOT THAT HARD TO FIGURE OUT.

I could try to edit all the dumb comments and leave in the parts that aren't out of line. But they'd end up looking like "The ...isn't....very much.... I think.....the... the... that I could......for certain."

Just try editing yourself. It's fun and could become a great hobby which could improve your entire life.

All you have to do is read what you've written before you send it, check for spelling, if possible, and take out all the parts where you're making stuff up, putting words in other people's mouths, not making sense, saying things as fact for which you have no proof whatsoever, or just generally being a horse's ass.

Then hit send.

With any luck, I won't have to waste my time being a romper room monitor.

Breaking news from Springfield:
Sen. Mike Jacobs has brokered a deal With Governor Rod Blagojevich for the opening of the minimum security portion of the Thomson prison. The prison will be opened in September 2006. A $6.2million dollar price tag is associated with the announcement. One hundred Employees will be hired with applications being taken soon. This is great news for the people of Thomson and their economy. The Governor kept his promise to the area with the announcement which came on the day that he promised. He promised news on Thomson during during his press meeting for his committment to WIU. Some questioned the Gov's commitment to the project prematurely but Sen. Mike Jacobs inside track with the Gov. has payed off.

I don't think it speaks highly of our community to have either one of these guys on the ticket let alone being the front runners. First off Jacobs', geez every time the kid opens his mouth something stupid or self-serving comes out of it. Second Rumler is running as the "the guy who isn't Mike Jacobs" and has no real substance to his campaign. You would think an area that has a U.S. Rep. like Lane Evans could come up with a better Dem for that spot.

Not to get off the subject of the two endorsements but has anyone noticed the Jacobs signs surfacing in town? I've noticed that in some cases there is more than one sign in the same yard. I don't really have a comment about this but more of a question. Could someone please enlighten me as to the reasoning for multiple signs in the same yard? I'm guessing at some point in time market research came to the conclusion that this was a good idea. Does anybody have this research? This would provide some interesting "office" reading.

Oh Oh -- the Governor didn't mention Thomson Prison or WIU-QC in his budget speech that WQAD carried live (thanks, WQAD!).

Does that mean there is no money in the budget for those projects?

Could someone please clarify.

What a great day for the community of Thomson. As a resident I was elated to hear that the funding for the Thomson prisonis in the budget. We are proud of our new Senator Mike Jacobs who went right to work to get this prison open. Something Todd Sieben failed to do. This will be a shot in the arm for the people of Thomson.

Has anyone noticed the waste involved in with the Rumler not only with the double signs but the giant billboard sign that I saw in RI. I for one think yard signs should be outlawed. But these giant type that Moen and Rumler have are obnoxious. Not in my neighborhood Mr Moen and Rumler.

ANON 16:34,

Could you expand on what your paper route is? I've been in various parts of Rock Island, Moline, and East Moline lately and would have to disagree with your statement. Also were there any drinks involved before you posted another comment at 21:00?

At 2/16/2006 8:23 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, the Jacobs illusion machine is working overtime now. Come on Mike anyone with a car knows that you've got multiple yard signs in the same yard all throughout Moline and Rock Island. In fact, if you don't believe me, check out the corner of 18th Ave and 25th Street in Rock Island. 2 Houses, 6 Jacobs signs. Stop lying to us Mike; you are the one with the multiple signs.

If you want to talk about wasteful, let's look at the tab that you ran up at the Blue Ribbon!

Empty promises and wasteful practices, reminds me of "W". Exercise your vote’s people, you can make a difference.

The Moen signs are everywhere. The giant Rumler sign that I saw was on 24th street in RI up from Black hawk road. I for one am opposed of these giant signs Moen and Rumler are using and think they should be banned. And if I want a drink at 12:00 I am entitled.

ANON 21:00

I have not noticed the waste with Rumler using double signs. I have seen the 4 X 8 signs, quite impressive. I have also seen many cases where Jacobs is putting two signs per yard. It wouldn't take much to come up with a list of addresses where this is taking place. Can you produce the same facts? I was a little impressed by the fact that he puts them at opposite ends of the property line to give the illusion of two houses in a row having Jacobs signs. So you say not in your neighborhood. Last time I check each person had the right to display whatever signs they wanted. Your not out there confiscating signs are you?

ANON 10:09

Weren't you saying something earlier about Rumler and double signs. I don't care about the location of a GIANT SIGN. You claimed Rumler has multiple signs in yards and anyone can drive around town and see that Jacobs has the multiple signs. You are most certainly entitled to a drink at 12:00. Just make sure your not all tanked up when your trying to count signs.

everyone running who has signs out has double signs in some locations..

At 2/17/2006 8:25 AM, Blogger The Inside Dope said...

Anon above... that's the bottom line on signs.

But I should note that for Jacobs' supporters to accuse Rumler of having too many signs is laughable.

There are so many Jacobs signs stuck in everything that doesn't move that it's incredible for that charge to even be made.

Case in point, the corner of Kennedy Dr. and 30th Ave (12th Ave. in Moline)

The corner contains three residences and a Walgreens.

Number of Jacobs signs at this one intersection?

Six.
