It's a horse race, neck and neck down to the wire

The 72nd District poll is really tight. There's been an amazing number of votes flooding in today and the spread between Darrow and O'Brien has been within 10 votes for some time.

It's really going to go all the way to the wire, so if you haven't voted, or know anyone who hasn't and you want to help your guy, better get in touch with them and get them to their computers by midnight tonight. This is going to be a squeaker by the looks of it.

Dope it is simply a matter of Firewall software that allows a computer to vote multiple times on this poll. I wouldn't trust the results for anything. All you need is some simple software like Zone Alarm Pro that protects you while you are surfing the internet. This software makes your computer invisible by hiding your IP address. The other method is to use proxy server software which lets you log in with IP addresses that are not your own. There is no such thing as an online poll that cannot be manipulated.

What this poll proves at the very least is that three of the named candidates made an effort to mobilize votes and none of the others had a clue the poll existed. At most it proves that two candidates either worked a lot harder than the third at recruiting votes or that they or their supporters figured out how to cast multiple votes.

Just look at Pat O'Brien take off. 20 votes in the last five minutes and counting.

if you refresh your screen and watch the Visitor counter it doesn't change, yet O'Briens' votes keep piling up. that's because the visitor counter tracks visitors by the IP address, and if your computer is not sending one out your visit won't register, but your vote will. Dope do you have a vistor count for the total number of visitors to this site before the poll started, compare it to the number of votes and then see how many votes have been cast compared to visits.

60+ votes now in less than ten minutes for O'Brien. your going to get carpal tunnel if yu don't slow down. Is it Darrow's people doing it to discredit O'Brien, maybe they did it to Benson too early on and figured since he got scolded so badly that the lesson was learned. Great strategy, very Roveian, very Darrowlike.

Wait I know what's going on. Don Johnston must have been hired to do robo calling for the entire 72nd and its the most succesful GOTV campaign ever. I can't wait till we can get online voting here in Illinois, no more door knocking and aching feet. no more poll watching necessary. just emails and robo calls, democracy of the future!!

The votes for O'Brien are shattering Ahern's last minute GOTV effort, almost 200 votes in the last half hour and not one break in the action to read these comments. you would think that at least a couple of these supporters would log in to defend their vote.

When the visitor counter stood at 16,065 O'Brien had 400 total votes, now the visitor counter stands at 16,073 and o'Brien has 584 votes. Darrow received one vote during this time and Benson none.

Shama, you're right on.
I'm of the same mind.

It just is pretty discouraging to see this.

I was aware that the thing was being gamed, but didn't know how or why. Your explanation makes perfect sense, though I hadn't given it enough thought to figure it out on my own.

I'm surprised that polls allow votes to count if it can't record a DNS record of an IP address.
It would seem that if they required a valid IP address before they allowed a vote, it would ensure that the count was straight. Would that be possible, or am I off base?

Oh, by the way, for the first poll, I did as you've suggested and compared the visitor count to the total number of votes. I didn't do it exactly, but it seems to line up pretty well.

I haven't done so with this one, and may not bother, as it's plain to anyone that it was gamed.

It's a shame, but .... apparently IF people can cheat, they will.
So that may be the end of polls which seek to judge support for candidates.
Too many unethical people out there.

Shama! You made my day with that comment about Don Johnston and his robo-dialer! hhahahaha!!!
Oh god, that killed me.

I remember seeing him at an event once. He'd stepped out into the lobby and had a cell phone to his ear. I thought to myself, Hmmmmm Must be making another one of those calls.

Gotta love those handy robo-callers. At least you know you don't have to listen to them and don't have to feel guilty hanging up on them.
