Dems take the gloves off..... at last!

Some great political theatre here for all you junkies. The Dems have forced a rare closed-door session of the Senate in an effort to try to leverage the Libby/Rove Plame investigation into an investigation into how pre-war intelligence was manipulated and misused in an effort to "sell" the American people on a false pretense for war.

What will this lead to? Will it backfire on the Dems, or, with Bush reeling on the ropes with plunging opinion poll numbers, is this exactly the time to demand accountability for what, after all, is only the most important matter our country ever faces, namely sending Americans into war, and whether this administration lied and/or committed crimes to lead us there. Since the Republicans investigation into the lead up to war was essentially a whitewash, is it really unreasonable to demand that the congress, who's job after all is to do exactly these sorts of things, provide a better acconting for how and why we were drug into what was arguably an illegal un-provoked invasion of a soverign country?

At any rate, this will undoubtedly be high theatre as it progresses.
WASHINGTON -- Democrats forced the Republican-controlled Senate into an unusual closed session Tuesday, demanding answers about intelligence that led to the Iraq war.

Republicans derided the move as a political stunt.

In a speech on the Senate floor, Democratic leader Harry Reid said the American people and U.S. troops deserved to know the details of how the United States became engaged in the war, particularly in light of the indictment of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff.

Reid demanded the Senate go into closed session. With a second by Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., the public was ordered out of the chamber, the lights were dimmed, senators filed to their seats on the floor and the doors were closed. No vote is required in such circumstances.

"The Libby indictment provides a window into what this is really all about, how this administration manufactured and manipulated intelligence in order to sell the war in Iraq and attempted to destroy those who dared to challenge its actions," Reid said before the doors were closed.

Democrats contend that the unmasking of Valerie Plame was retribution for her husband, Joseph Wilson, publicly challenging the Bush administration's contention that Iraq was seeking to purchase uranium from Africa. That claim was part of the White House's justification for going to war.

Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss., said Reid was making "some sort of stink about Scooter Libby and the CIA leak."

A former majority leader, Lott said a closed session is appropriate for such overarching matters as impeachment and chemical weapons -- the two topics that last sent the senators into such sessions.

As Reid spoke, Majority Leader Bill Frist met in the back of the chamber with a half-dozen senior GOP senators, including Intelligence Committee Chairman Pat Roberts, who bore the brunt of Reid's criticism. Reid said Roberts reneged on a promise to fully investigate whether the administration exaggerated and manipulated intelligence leading up to the war.

Argel, first of all, thanks for commenting. I'll try to be gentle, but you must realize how ... well, silly your comment is on so many levels.

First of all, like all rather dim-witted right wing apologists, when faced with the blatant ineptitude and horrible leadership of your party and Bush, you do what? Why of course, you go back 6 years and try to slam Clinton!

Now, what does that say? Well, for starters, you can't defend the disasterous Bush presidency for one, but it also has absolutely NOTHING to do with the present. What does what Clinton did or didn't do, (even though you're typically ill-informed and dead wrong about it, but we'll get to that presently.)have to do with what Bush has done to this country?
Answer: NOTHING

If you're seriously trying to blame the sorry state we find ourselves in on Clinton, you are so ill-informed and willfully stupid that you probably shouldn't even be taken seriously, as that's perhaps the dumbest thing I've heard around here for a long time, and that's saying a lot, trust me.

You ask, "...have you stopped to think about the mess the democrats left?"

What the HELL do you mean? Taking the Reagan/Bush 1 deficit and turning in into a record surplus? Or maybe you're referring to the longest sustained period of economic growth in history?
Are you referring to the fact that Clinton never sent a single member of the Armed Services into combat that didn't come back alive?

Are you talking about our government and country being respected around the world as a force for peace and human dignity?

Or, as I suspect, are you so deluded and hate the country so much that you think turning Clinton's record surplus into us being TRILLIONS UPON TRILLIONS of dollars in debt, the highest defictit EVER in the history of the word, a debt held by countries such as China and Saudi Arabia to the point where they basically own the country, being mired in an unwinnable war against a tactic, spending 6 BILLION dollars a month in order to kill and maim our service members and innocent Iraqis, being hated by 2/3 of the entire world, INCREASING our risk of terrorist attack due to our actions serving as a brilliant recruiting and motivational tool for those who wish us harm, rampant corruption and no bid, no accountability, open-ended contracts handed out like candy to Bush's biggest contributors, the middle class getting squeezed to death in order to hand out more money in tax breaks to the millionaires among us, etc. etc. etc. ...

You're saying that you much prefer a guy who's lied and lied and lied about subjects both big and small.
I hate to point it out to you, but he lied to YOU too, the sad difference being that you bought it and still do, despite the proof otherwise.
Clinton lied about sex and no one was hurt, except his family. Bush lies to con us into war and thousands and thousands of people have DIED.

His entire administration is built upon lies and deceptions, and you better fasten your seatbelt, because they're going to be exposed sooner or later, despite their huge effort to stop investigations and stonewall and cover up evidence.

If you still insist on sticking your head in the sand and buying the right wing bullshit you're constantly fed, then frankly, you deserve to be ridiculed.

Your guy will be enshrined in history as perhaps the worst president this country has ever had to endure. While the guy you have such a hang-up with is beloved and respected by more people both in this country and around the world than the tin-horn wanna-be dictator Bush can ever hope to be. Bush's approval numbers are now far lower than Clintons just after he was impeached, for God's sake! What does that tell you?

Snap out of it. There's no gain in going down wth your little big man's ship. Wake up and face the ugly facts. You were wrong, we were right. Deal with it.
