Curveball
Bush nominates John Roberts for Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
In an almost instant decision, only a day after Rehnquist died, Bush has nominated John Roberts, a man who if confirmed, could end up serving 40 years or more as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
This suggests that Bush is rushing the decision for tactical reasons, and it will certainly put those who oppose Roberts off balance, especially in light of the Katrina disaster. It also frees up Bush to pick yet another very conservative nominee for associate justice.
