Breaking story

Where it took FEMA, the National Guard, and rescue workers 5 or 6 days to reach the New Orleans convention center, after their arrival in New Orleans, it took three college kids 20 minutes to get there.

Those who watched coverage of the Katrina disaster will recall one of the most maddening situations of the aftermath. Thousands of people were stranded at a convention center where they'd taken refuge, and they were simply abandoned and left for days without water, food, or security. Many died and their bodies left to rot, the building was filled with feces and human waste. There were reports of rapes and murders, and fights broke out constantly. There was no food or water for days on end as the thousands slowly deteriorated and people continued to die as the living desperately plead for their lives.

It was reported on every news channel, complete with video, exactly what was going on there with even reporters angrily demanding that some aid be sent to these people.

FEMA head Brown tried to say it was because they didn't know about the situation, which is absurd, and others suggested it was just too difficult to reach the convention center. There were many excuses and days of delay while the situation continued to spiral down into horrid and inhuman conditions.

Well, on CNN at the moment, they're interviewing three college guys. They'd witnessed this situation and decided to make up fake press credentials and set off for New Orleans to try to provide help to the thousands stranded and dying at the convention center.

They were able to get through the National Guard check-point without problem, and though none of them had ever been to New Orleans and were familiar with the streets, they were able to reach the convention center in 20 MINUTES driving their Hyundai Elantra.

Bear in mind that this was after the squalid and violent situation there was being reported all over the media for days and no one was able to so much as provide water to the victims. These guys saw it on TV, and simply drove there. They drove directly to the convention center, a site of incredible suffering, violence, squalid conditions, and death, while FEMA and others dithered and made excuses.

The guys also saw dozens and dozens and dozens of EMPTY busses being driven north and dozens of others sitting idle in New Orleans.

They didn't have to drive through deep water, they didn't have to fight off gangs of armed thugs. It only took them TWENTY MINUTES to drive straight to the convention center, where thousands were starving, dying, being raped, and killed.

If three young kids can drive their Hyundai there in twenty minutes, WHY IN THE HELL did FEMA, the National Guard, and everyone else take DAYS to get there to relieve the thousands living like animals and where many people simply died from lack of aid?

And what's the story with the dozens of empty school busses heading out of town?
Remember, this was at the very worst of the aftermath, a few days after the storm had hit.
