Whalen TV ads pitch Whalen... or pork chops?
Have you seen the new spots being run by Iowa 1st district candidate and Iowa Machine Shed restaurateur Mike Whalen?
I'm not sure if it would inspire me to vote for him, but it sure makes me hungry.
The spot seems to feature equal parts Whalen and tantalizing close ups of the signature dish at his restaurants, thick pork chops, with the hook being that he doesn't favor pork unless it's the kind you can buy at his restaurants. (though he never mentions the restaurants explicitly, it's impossible to miss the connection.)
No wonder there's been grousing that he's mixing advertising for his businesses with his campaign.
Every time I see the ad, I really don't notice Whalen as much as I get a craving for a big pork chop, proving that the guy didn't become a gazillionaire for nothing.

I saw it today and involuntarily salivated. Pavlov has now left the building.
A couple months ago you only saw Whalen barn signs in rural Scott County. Now there are just as many, if not more, Bill Dix signs.
A couple months ago I'd say Whalen had the nomination locked up - I'm not so sure now. What do I know though - it's awfully hard to think like a republican when you have opposable thumbs. ;)
I guess to run for Congress, you can give yourself/campaign as much dough as you want to.....
How that works as far as Corporate gift limits I am not sure? Anyone know??
Anon 1404,
Corporate contributions are not permissible in federal elections. Laudering through PAC's however is jolly good sport.
You can spend as much of your own money tht you want to spend.
I'm not one to defend Whalen, but what he's doing now is a little different and completely legit. Before (when the complaints began) he was showing up in ads bought and paid for by Heart Of America/Machine Shed that seemed to focus a little too much on him. Now he's showing up in ads bought and paid for by his campaign (to which he can only donate so much of his own money) that focus on his restaurant.
It's more of a gift from his campaign to his company, not the other way around. Now if I had given money to his campaign I might be miffed. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised to see more Machine Shed commercials featuring him if he gets the GOP nod.
Either way, until he's out of the race, I won't eat at his restaurants or stay at his hotels. It's a shame Mike Jacobs chose to hold a fundraiser at Johnny's Steakhouse last winter.
You want to boycot Johnny"S steakhouse. I bet you love to drive your Honda down to save at the Walmart. What a joke.
Tiz, is this spook stalking you or what?
Apparently he is. And apparently not eating at a heart of america restaurant is unamerican - as is doing anything else that doesn't directly line the pockets of the GOP.
I will say this though - I'd be much less embarrassed driving a Honda right now than I am of the Ford (who needs 30K people) I currently do drive. I must hate freedom for thinking that way. :)
As do I for eating at Jonny's. How about you at WallMart. I saw you going in there and Sam's. Don't even deny it.
If one of the Waltons was running for office and using Wal-Mart commercials as an end-around FEC rules I would avoid Wal-Mart.
As a rule of thumb I avoid Wal-Mart (that's how you spell it, btw) but there's only so many places I can go buy rubbers, goldfish and a Cheeze Whiz at 2am. If you don't know why that's relevant you should ask your old lady.
It figures someone like you could go to and spekk wallmart. Republicans love the place.
