Advance excerpt from Obama's new book, "The Audacity of Hope"

Barack Obama has produced a book titled "The Audacity of Hope: Reclaiming the American Dream". It won't be available until October, but you can read a sneak preview here. (In .PDF format, must have Adobe Reader installed.)

From a release notice:
Too often our political discussions focus on the things that divide us, but there are a lot of things we all have in common as Americans. On issues of faith, race, foreign policy or the economy, if we start with recognizing what we have in common, we can arrive at a politics that isn't as partisan and a little more productive.

Hopefully you'll find the book insightful and thought provoking. For now, here is a brief excerpt from The Audacity of Hope.

Seems like all Obama does is write books and appear on glityz national TV programs. How about just focusing on being a United States Senator for the state of Illinois. We need him here, doing his job for this state.

His first book was written long before he was famous, much less a senator from IL. Yes he was on Conan (last week I believe) - but Conan was also being taped in Chicago. Also, Obama hasn't missed a single vote in the Senate since he's been there, which is way more than can be said about many other prominent members of both parties.

I guess I'm curious in what aspect is he failing to do his job for IL?

I've seen Obama make one, maybe two, downstate trips since being elected. That's beyond pathetic. Dick Durbin has been to downstate communities a dozen times a year.
What I'm hearing from Obama's staff is that he doesn't want to be bothered with downstate trips due to his busy world wide travel and celebrity schedule.

Now, you can argue that maybe in the long run that will help Illinois.

I don't know Sen Obama's trip schedule, but I've written him twice and received replies from him on both letters within two weeks.

I have a feeling Obama is doing just fine for Illinois.

Methinks I detect a little sour grapes at his enormous nationwide popularity and acclaim.

But nah! There's never any of that petty stuff here. What was I thinking?!

Wow, I sat there and read the entire passage and actually felt a little fuzzy inside, I dare admit.

Then I came back here and read the comments...

We all have a long road ahead.

Sadly, I know what you mean.

This is just one more reason I'm firmly convinced that most of the most stupid commenters here don't even bother following or reading the links in posts, and rarely read the entire post, much less comprehend it.

They just skim through it until they find something they think they can whine or complain or attack me for, and then leave some half-baked comment that they hope will pass for thought.

It's depressing. But don't give up.
