Young... your point is well taken, but I think you stopped a step short. A prime reason the state is so strapped is that we're all living under the "starve government to death" Republican administration. Their stated goal is to starve government of money and "shrink it down to the size where it can be drowned in a bathtub".
They've cut aid to the states drastically, and the state in turn cuts funds for municipalities and passes on more and more costs to them. And... yep... follow the bouncing ball.... we the people then end up paying massive tax increases on the local and state level.
And why is this boys and girls?
Yes, you're right.
Because of all the tax givaways that Bush gave to the right wingers and the most wealthy in the country.
Bush slashes government income, government slashes programs across the board, putting struggling states on the ropes, states cut back and with-hold aid to municipalities, and those $400 tax rebates that the ignorant thought was so groovy and why they loved Bush, evaporates into thin air. Unless you're a multi-millionaire, the tax cuts you got from Bush is going to be more than outweighed by the local and state tax increases. It's a big circle, with Bush at the top, and YOU, the average person, at the bottom.
Bush knew that people would never be bright enough to connect the dots. So he appears to be cutting people's taxes, and all he's doing is shifting the burden on to state and local governments to do the tax raising.
