The Rock Island County Democratic Party's annual Labor Day Picnic at Illiniwek Park begins around noon on Monday, September 5, Labor Day.
Invited guests include: Iowa Sec of State Chet Culver, Iowa Senator Tom Harkin, Illinois Senators Dick Durbin and Barack Obama, Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack, Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich and more.
This event proves that although national labor leaders may be divided, labor folks in this region are very much united behind progressive Democrats in both Iowa and Illinois.

And don't forget the gooey chicken and the always electrifying musical entertainment Gianulis arranges.
It's a good time in a nice spot. Let's just hope that they spring for something better than the crappy PA system of past years. It sounds like something a grade schooler built out of old car radio speakers, bailing wire, duct tape and lamp cord.
Nothing like having a string of nationally known politicians there to speak and having the PA sound worse than an AM radio in a garbage can... and that's when it isn't cutting out constantly or screeching feedback. Pay $50 and have a professional system with someone who knows how to run it.
Hell, there's probably some Dems who are week-end warrior musicians out there who'd do it for nothing.
But as I say, aside from that, it's a great event in a great spot and fun for everyone. I highly encourage anyone who hasn't gone to go, and those that have to be sure to attend.
Oley Olson's son, as I recall, was one kick ass horn player himself and worked professionally. I seem to recall seeing the young Olson performing with Woody Herman's Thundering Herd years ago.
And if they can't get a decent sound system, they should just not bother. Handing the candidates a megaphone would have been better than the one used the past couple years.
