Another right-wing proposal shown to be folly
There's been a lot of hew and cry in the media, especially from the usual gang of programmed right-wing shills, about how those silly civil rights and the mamby-pamby liberals who love them are making us all vulnerable to the 'terrists who, as Bush and his minions constantly remind us, spend every waking moment of their lives dreaming about killing YOU and everyone you hold dear. (even your pets, including goldfish.)
It seems that these wingers really, really, REALLY want to go full bore on profiling, that is, singling out anyone who looks like they're a youngish person of arabian or middle-eastern extraction. They say that it's just plain silly to be checking everyone randomly. They're insulted and really pissed that decent white people like themselves have to be inconvenienced in our so-called "war on terror."
Why bother us superior and innocent white christians? Just concentrate on those swarthy men who are evil incarnate. And as part of their whining, they manage to blame this situation on liberals, of course.
I guess this suggests that if they had their way,they'd never bother good white people. Hell, no white person would ever do anything like those evil Muslims do.
Since 9-11, there's only been one case of actually finding someone with an explosive device trying to board an airplane. The IED, or improvised explosive devise was in the possession of this
Oooops.
(not to mention good old Timmy McVeigh, and Eric Rudolph, both responsible for home-grown terrorism, and both lily white.)
We can only thank the stars that at least the looney right doesn't get all of their stupid idea put into practice.

Someone commented that for every complicated real-world problem there is a simple solution that is obvious, easy and wrong. Only subjecting Middle-Eastern looking young men to extra security checks at airports is one of those simple, easy and wrong ideas. Leaving aside the terrorists who do not meet that description, those who do would simply recruit or dupe someone female, white or elderly to carry their bombs for them. We have already seen that in Israel where there have been a rash of female suicide bombers lately - presumably because the security forces were focusing on young men.
Obvious, easy, and wrong. Dave, you really hit the nail on the head.
It has always disturbed me how often people actually fall for such type of solutions for complex problems. The past two presidential elections really highlighted this, with the right succeeding in actually making a considered and nuanced approach to difficult issues out to be some sign of weakness, or worse.
It seems as though the right and Bush have triumphed largely because their policies often, at least on the surface, reflect the intellectual capacity of of 7th graders, if that.
But it's done that way purposely so that people don't have to think to have it sink in. They're constantly appealing to people's basest and most shallow emotional responses. And sadly, it's been incredibly effective.
I sincerely hope that this appeal to the very stupidest among us finally backfires and people start to regain their critical thinking ability and realize that they've been being taken for chumps by the right wing noise machine all along.
