Violence in the QCs: Teen murder again

Davenport police were trying to determine late Sunday how the body of a 19-year-old Davenport man ended up in the trunk of a car.

The body was discovered around 2 p.m. in a car parked near Central Park Avenue and Brady Street.

Officers said they were investigating the case as a homicide; the man had wounds on his upper torso. They also believed he was not killed where the vehicle was found.

Police said late Sunday that they know the victim's identity but were not yet releasing his name. An autopsy will be scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.

It's true that Davenport is plagued more severely with gang activity, at least judging by the shootings and murders over there.

I'm sure that the first subsconsious thought of many upon reading things like this are first "well, it's just a black gang-banger... oh well." and "It's in Davenport, not my problem."

Obviously, neither is helpful. It's really a shame.

Obviously, the problem also lies with the Davenport PD. (which of course is supposed to be controled by the Mayor, so your point is well taken). But for many years the Davenport PD has been probably the worst in the quad cities on many accounts.
For several years, it seems like they'd total a squad car about once a week, they've had countless number of "bad" cops revealed as crooks themselves or renegade sadists. They've shot dead an unarmed mentally ill man on the street, and on and on.
It seems like Phil Yerington was a good influence in the department while he was there, but he got squeezed out and the PD has again gone downhill.
It seem obvious that the Davenport PD needs to give their gang unit more focus and improve their effectiveness.
