FINAL UNOFFICIAL COUNT
PAT O'BRIEN. . . . . . . . . . 3,808 ... 49.35 percent
DONALD P. WELVAERT . . . . . . . 3,899 ... 50.53 percent
Welvaert on WQAD as I type says that he anticipates a recount and would expect O'Brien to ask for one.
Under the catagory of small consolation, WQAD's online viewers poll had O'Brien over Welveart 56 to 44 percent.
Complete results for all races can be found at the Rock Island County Clerk's Election Results page.

Damn! The kid finished 5th.
OK, I never claimed to be any kind of expert on the Illinois side of things (actually, I never claimed to be an expert anywhere....), but did the Moline school district voters just turn out two incumbents, including the school board president???
What a shame that Pat O'Brien lost the mayor's race by a hare. Pat is a good guy who would have been a solid mayor for the city. His slim margin of loss should not deter him from seeking future public office. Remember, Abe Lincoln lost three times before moving up the ladder!
10% of the vote in east moline was a writein campaign? is that higher than normal? thodos has crawled in bed with the boland family and that turns me off. he called my house for mary boland and the son in law who lost. mike boland made phone calls for thodos when he ran for mayor. interesting who is in cahoots with who aint it?
that darned WQUAD is NEVER right -
that darned WQUAD is NEVER right -
who was the write in for in East Moline anyway.... I also agree.... Boo to Thodos for coat tailing with the Boland family...
Anon... sorry for the delay...I've had other things to deal with. I'm not sure who the write-in you refer to was in East Moline, but there was a fairly substantial write-in candidate in Moline as reported in the Dispatch:
"In the 4th Ward, sitting Ald. Dick Potter beat out a write-in candidate, James Beals, with 695 votes, or 81 percent. Mr. Beals received 161 votes, or 18 percent, according to final, unofficial results."
Thanks dope.if you find out who was written in in EM let us know.
Not sure how the new moline mayor is going to function with a split council? Bet he was not plannin on that.....
With O'Brien out, it's very fortunate that the council is split. Only time will tell how they all function.
Like the national situation, it's a very bad thing to have one party rule.
Power corrupts, and abolute power corrupts absolutely.
Dope you are right. Hope that the voters now know that the Committee for Better City Government run by Moline's elite and wealthy is simply a puppet organization to funnel funds into every Republican candidate they can to try for total Republican control in a non-partisan way.....
The voters - at least close to 50% of them anyway, appear to have figured that out. Plus the election of Mike Carton over Andria "pizza lady" McDermit proved that. Did anyone else find her campaign lit a bit boring? Plus she didn't do a thing except let the Better gov throw money her way and guess what - the one who actually worked, won - and will do a fine job because he will actually work on something instead of relying on money to get it for him.
Let's hope that maybe the next round in Moline will see the committee for better gov outed more openly in the Dispatch. Maybe their little forum can study that issue???
I hope that our little "citizens committee" gets the full light of day treatment in the future.
After all, the Dispatch, that wonderful paper, would only dare reprint the committee's own description of itself as "a nonpartisan group of people who live or work in Moline and support various local candidates." HA!
What a crock!
They did finally out Hunt Harris as it's director, but other than that, there's been no info on their donors or operations at all.
Well Dope, it's leader in reality by former Ald Dick Parsons who led the charge to try and beat O'Brien into the ground and smear his reputation - unsuccessfully. Also, check the reports leading up to the election and see the other whos whos of Deere and Company for a list of the "average citizens" who feel strongly about "Better City Government" and while you are at it, look over their required reporting and note that hey, they do give money to outside communities other than Moline. Last time I checked, Peoria was not part of Moline or even the Quad Cities. So maybe that's a bit "scary" you know?
They won't go away until the entire council is elected Republican with the use of that nonpartisan election crap.
Dick Parsons was one of the folks along with Leach who thought up the nonpartisan elections idea and then Parsons got beat at his own game at the ballot box by a much better candidate. Watch out cause he will be back - he keeps coming back. What else do you do when your daddy leaves you loads of money and a company and you have time on your hands?
They are all a bunch of hypocritic rich people running that committee who think they know what's best for us little folk out in Moline. The new mayor himself said that he is elected to make the tough decisions for us. Can't wait to see how he decides the issues....... That is the scary part here.
