Note: In shuffling posts around this morning, I inadvertently deleted an excellent post by LatinV where they offer their predictions for the results of today's election. The following is their post as it originally appeared. My apologies.

welvaert 52%-48% why: It's Moline
schwibert 82%-18% why: Because
best/banasek why: too close
mckay why: quinn is a nut
darrow, shirk, jungwirth, parr why: it's R.I. County Dems
ballard/shrek: why: incumbents
thodos-why: DeJaynes aint running
all dems in s.moline
bryn lawrence wins a seat on the school board (that's a sentimental pick for the kid)
McDermot/Carton--- too close
crotty over stillwell 70-30
beecher over snodrass; big
denny S.B.C. Pauley in RI
brooks over evans

I'll be drinking somewhere in upper RI county if you'd like to join me....

I'll pick up a list of all the liquor license holders in the county and have a drink at each place until I bump into you. Sounds like a plan.

(shame-faced because I should have posted my "prediction" here instead of the entry above this one)

I also pick Bryn Lawrence as a sentimental favorite. Go, kid!

I'll give Pat O'Brien the edge in the Moline Mayor's race, since he has likely has a better field and get-out-the-vote program running today. I say 53-47%.

A light vote total in East Moline, may spell trouble for South Moline Democrats.

I don't know where he got it, but it's pretty damn good. Kudos to LatinV for such accurate predictions.

yea latinv who are you?

Who cares? LatinV is LatinV... that's all you need to know.

After all, only two commenters put the effort into sharing their predictions, and Latin V was the only one to offer his call on several races, several of which proved to be pretty damn close.

Speculation as to the identity of any commenters (or the blog owner) will be immediately deleted on sight. It is unecessary, unfair, and reckless to suggest, most likely in error, someone's identity.

Dope no one knew how much money and influence was behind the winner of the Moline Mayor race least of all the guy who actually won.... He probably still is clueless about much of what goes on around him. After all - he said he had nothing to do with any of the negative stuff and he had no knowledge of stuff that happened directly realted to his campaign. Bet the money spent will never truely be reported in the end as usual. Laws, what are those? Who is in charge in his camp anyway, donald duck? Good luck to him in the future.

Yep, if there ever was an example of a clueless puppet, Welvaert is it. I've always felt that Leach was the same thing. Just a boob put up by a shadow government.

I mean, why would the Republicans run a guy who routinely smoked pot with his students while he was a high school teacher? It's because they didn't care! As long as he was a compliant stooge who once bought, would stay bought.

This town is run by Hunt Harris, Butts, Hans Becherer, and a handful of other multi-millionaires. That wouldn't be a problem if they ran it in an enlightened way. But they haven't. They've been narrow minded and focused all of the development towards corporate style projects.

Dope Fiend - how come Leach can serve the City for 20 years with many of the folks who might have seen him doing the stuff you mention living here in Moline and it does not get brought out by anyone - his opponents or the media -- in the crush of his multiple campaigns? That is truely a mystery if it is true.

IF that is true about Leach, then his attacks and his endorsements should have fallen on deaf ears. Seems kind of wierd for a big Republican to have such a large skeleton in the closet and not have it pop out. Anyone know of any real life proof or stories about our Mayor LEach?

I was sceptical of the stories of kids smoking pot with Leach while he taught high school for some time. But I've simply heard it too many times over the years, and when I express my doubts to these people, they swear that it happened. I've spoken to two people at differnt times who don't know each other as far as I know, and they both swore that they'd smoked pot with him.

It's enough to convince me that it's true, but needless to say, that doesn't rise to the level of solid proof and it's still second hand, as I myself never witnessed anything.

There were also similar stories about another female teacher, and I myself was present with others at her apartment where we were all drinking.

As to why no one has ever raised the issue about Leach, I think that's pretty easy to figure out. Why would anyone who smoked pot with their teacher want to come forward and put themselves in the spotlight, open themselves up to intense attack, and cause a lot of grief for Leach?

It was probably the student's pot anyway, and those that did smoke with him likely think it was pretty cool of Leach to do so and they have no desire to turn on him, especially after all these years and when he has so much to lose.

It would reallly be a foolish and unecessary thing to do from their point of view. These people could care less whether Leach is mayor or not.

Personally, I don't think that if he smoked dope with students it was the worst thing in the world, and I don't think it was harmful to the students at the time, who were smoking pot anyway whether Leach was with them or not.

The only thing that bugs me is that it showed an odd willingness to risk scandal and losing his job at the time, and more than that, I simply don't know how he went from THAT Stan Leach, to the Moline elite's man in City Hall.

That boggles my mind more than people saying they got high with him in high school.

Dope Fiend I wonder...

I heard from some people that Leach barely got in the 1st time as Mayor and was elected by a lot of working class dems and then as soon as he got in he cozied up to the Deere crowd and he forgot where he "came from".

Others have said he is a short fuse and has no time for people in meetings unless you are a big businessman type or something. If you are a little guy with a problem that he doesn't care about he cuts you off.

I personally have seen his anger flare up needlessly in the scant few times I have been at the Council to follow an issue.

And the media says everyone likes him. Humph - not true not true!
