This race ended up like just about every other competitive race -- full of charges and countercharges about who will be the best (or worst) mayor.
There is mud all around, on both candidates, on both sides, splattered throughout the city of mills, Moline.
May the winner practice lots of humility and work quickly toward uniting the opposing camps.
Nice chaps dope!
Huh???
Having just gone out to vote, on my way, I couldn't help noticing that each of the four O'Brien yard signs that had been up along the route were either stolen completely or the sign torn off the stake.
Other yard signs for township and county candidates were untouched.
Looks like a squad was out in a last desperate effort to hurt O'Brien's chances.
Anyone else notice sign vandalism?
Welvaerts signs on 12th ave were repeatedly torn down for the last month. Remember it was Cecilia O'Brien four years ago that was caught tearing down some signs when her boss Lane was running...
That's quite an accusation. I assume it's just a rumor?
no dope, that's a fact!
I've since found out from other sources that it was indeed reported that Cecelia O'Brien was caught taking down yard signs.
At any rate, the O'Brien's were unsuccessful in their hard fought campaign against some truly scurilous and slimy tactics.
Now the elite of Moline are free to continue their reign of error for another term.
Amen Dope -----could not have said it better - cause the best original thinker on the Council is soon ending his term and will exit the Council -- and they now will look to the new leader who hopefully has some ideas for how to lead the City?? Have yet to see an original thought from the guy....
Let's hope and pray he does well as Mayor anyway since nearly half the voters did not think so.
Let's all hope that they'll jerk themselves out of their one-track thinking on development. But it's likely that as always, the one's with the most money and most access will continue to dictate the direction of Moline development, and it will continue to reflect the interests and desires of only a handful of the residents of the town.
I don't know Dope - I hope you are wrong. Let's hope the citizens are now wide awake after that hard fought battle. Those 3808 people are probably not going to take this loss lying down here.
It's entirely possible that the new mayor may be in for the surprise of his life!
Deere led business as usual and ho hum meetings in Moline may be a thing of the past and may be a dinosaur that leaves with boring Stan Leach's 12 year reign ending.
The winds they are a changing and the winner is not necessarily the winner here. He is probably scared to death of what's gonna happen in the future and he should be.
I would hope you were right. But... of those 3,808 people that voted for O'Brien, I'd wager about 12 of them could be considered "activists" that will actually voice their opinions on matters.
Sad, but likely true.
Dope I am gonna betcha a pizza dinner in honor of the Happy joes lady that lost her bid for a seat on Council that this Mayor race will not be forgotton by many many folks for a long long time - and that there are way more than 12 activists involved here. I usually win my bets too......
Just watch - the next 2 years will be real fun and then the 2 after that will be even more fun -- for some of us anyway. The Deere crowd may have met their match!
