Home stretch bombshells

In any race, it's a common occurance for campaigns to launch some of their most negative and slimy bombs very late in the race when there's not enough time for the candidate getting slimed to respond.

Will this primary be any exception?

So far, there's been a phony astro turf group calling themselves "People for Responsible Government" who have sent out letters tearing Sheriff Mike Grchan a new one for various labor issues they have a problem with. It's signed by Karen Calvillo, Rock Island County Board member, and Dino Leone, the Staff Representitive for AFSCME Council 31.

Credit should be given for the fact that at least it's signed by real, live people. Much of the time, such front groups simply mail out hit pieces with no accountibility. The groups don't have to disclose their funding sources until far after the election, and so it's easy to disguise or hide completely who is behind them.

This can be the spot to document any other such Hail Mary attempts in the late stages of this campaign.

** UPDATE **

The Dope has just received the infamous recorded message from Personal PAC. They are still repeating the lie that Jacobs is the ONLY pro-choice candidate in this election. This is running on March 18th, only days from the election, despite Rumler having issued a statement vigorously condemning the messages and asserting his pro-choice views 15 days ago on the 3rd!

The entire speil runs,
"This is (unintelligble), chair of Personal PAC, calling to urge you to take a Democratic ballot this Tuesday and vote for pro-choice Mike Jacobs for State Senator. Jacobs is the ONLY Democratic candidate for state senator who will protect the health and lives of women. Thank you."
How's that for slimy?

Just read over at the "taking a crack at it" blog, that those pictured on Mikey's flyer aren't happy that their likeness was used without their permission. Mike "just did it" says TACAI. Sounds familiar.

Are the facts in the letter from the board member and labor member true? If so, ouch.

Rumler shouldn't have tried to hide his views.

Has anyone called Jacobs campaign manager Pat O'Brien for an explanation of these activities?
Instead of bashing the campaign, how about asking the camp mgr for an explanation and I'm sure there is one and Pat's a great guy.

How did Jacobs work as a "downstate" liason for Jesse White, when he worked from home, in East Moline? I mean, I understand that downstate often means anything outside of Chicago, but it seems like it would be difficult to get much "liasoning" done from your home, 200 miles away from the people that you serve.

Just checked Jacobs financial reports, and he's got more money on there from Personal Pac. So there's no question that Jacobs OK'd this round of phone smears.

I wouldn't state it that way, as certainly the Jacobs campaign, as they did before, will maintain that the group is acting independently and they have nothing to do with it.

Whether you want to buy that is up to you.

I'm selling, not buying.

Why do you hide the fact that Rumler should adress his reason for not turning in his paperwork. Did he forget which is bad or did he sit the fence and not expect this kind of outcome. Either way is a bad tinng for women. Rumler needs to explain his reason for not filling out the choice question. Ask him in a post. I am waiting. for at least my comment. You don't hold Rumler to any standard. Waiting for things to change.

Dope, did you hear about Boland's press conference? Apparently he announced that he is not endorsing Mike Jacobs. I guess he wasn't happy about his picture appearing in Jacobs flyers, etc. Rumor is that Obama isn't happy about it either.

The issue of why Rumler never filled out has never been adressed. I looked at his statement and he never adressed it has anyone else. He was either sitting the fence on this volitile issue or he forgott. either way it is bad judgement.

It's been confirmed that Rep. Mike Boland did indeed hold a press conference at which he stated that his appearance on a Jacobs mailer may be misleading as he is not endorsing the Senator.

Boland was told to play nice. Wonder why he changed his mind?
What will Madigan think of all this?

I was in the room when Mike Boland and Senator Mike Jacobs shook hands and agreed to support one and other. For Boland to go back on his word suprised me.

I bet when Speaker Madigan finds out that the truce was broken by Boland he is going to be very dissapointed!

Boland doesn't appear very bright. Senator Mike Jacob, flush with mounds of campaign dough and w eak general election opponent is in great position to extract maximum retribution.

Boland is a fool!

Hey anonymous 15:22,
Your "Speak and Spell" must be broken. I wasn't "suprised" or "dissapointed". I'm "w eak" from laughing. If "Boland is a fool", he's not alone.
