Kennedy lighting rod for right wing hatred

It's simply stunning. For two days now, C-Span's Washington Journal has focused on the Alito hearings. Its call in segments are usually good for seeing just how frighteningly stupid people are... or at least those who are inclined to sit on hold for hours for the chance to blather for a few seconds before being cut off.

Normally, there'd be nothing worth mentioning, except that for the past two days, the right wingers have been absolutely obsessed with savaging Ted Kennedy. It's just amazing. Almost none of the knuckle-draggers have anything to say about Alito's qualifications or his views on unlimited executive power, racial equality, or any other important factor, but they are utterly single-mindedly obsessed with bashing Ted Kennedy.

Most of it is along the lines of "how can Kennedy sit there and question anyone's character", and of course, there's the constant vile remarks about his drinking, his weight, and Chappaquidic.

It's stunning to me, not that the wing-nuts would use this stupid attack which of course ignores the important questions Kennedy has raised, but the sheer number of the attacks.

Forget about the guy who's going to make vital decisions which affects the lives and direction of the country for decades to come. Let's take pot-shots at Ted Kennedy because he used to drink.

It's a shabby and sad example of how the right has convinced complete morons that their utterly clueless opinion on vital and complex matters carries as much weight as people who do know what they're talking about.

What is it about Ted that has driven these people into such a hate fest?

Maybe they are afraid he might run for president.

It's shameful. I always question the validity of calls on these shows where they have repeat calls off-topic.

The hatred of all things Kennedy among the wingnuts is palpable. I remember being at dinner with friends the weekend JFK Jr's plane went missing. Our friend went on and on about how disgusting it was, that no one cared, that the "media" would never cover such a thing if it were a Bush, etc. We tried to disagree, but she just wouldn't have it.

I remember getting in the car later that night and muttering under my breath "what a f*cking piece of work..." to which my spouse heartily agreed.

I believe that what scratched off the scab of festering Kennedy hatred was the exchange between Arlen Specter and Ted Kennedy during the Alito hearings.

Kennedy and the Dems were already taking a lot of this bullshit fake rightwing outrage about how "mean" they were and how they had no class and were so awful to this "fine man" Alito. (I don't know what hearings they were watching. I sure didn't see anything approaching rudeness, unless of course, as is the case, they consider asking ANY hard questions about his background or history to be "rude".)

Then when Specter went ballistic on Kennedy and chewed him out like a child, telling him "I'm not going to let you run this committee" or something like that, it served to jack up the conservatives into full froth.

Ted Kennedy, though he certainly could be faulted for many things in his long life, is undeniably a great and often courageous legislator and as youngridem observed above, has more than demonstrated high moral character thoughout his life, despite the incident in Chappaquidick.

The level and amount of vile, venomous attacks on Kennedy was almost gut-wrenching to hear.
