Topinka picks Birkett for #2 slot, Alexi Giannoulias announces for treasurer
Two developments in Illinois politics are worth noting. First, though a formal announcement has not yet been made, Republican Judy Baar Topinka is expected to announce her choice of DuPage County State's Attorney Joe Birkett as her lieutenant governor running mate.
And Chicago banker Alexi Giannoulias has announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for state treasurer, thus challenging party annointed candidate Knox County State's Attorney Paul Mangieri:
Now that Judy Baar-Topinka is officially seeking the governor's office her state treasurer's seat is up for grabs. It's being said, though not confirmed, that supposedly Giannoulias is some sort of shirt-tail relation to Democratic Rock Island County Chairman John Gianulis.
[Giannoulias] is currently the Vice President of Chicago based Broadway Bank.
U.S. Senator Barack Obama and Representative Jesse Jackson Junior were among Giannoulias' group of supporters.
Will this put an end to calls for Boland to jump into the fray?

Well we should find out this week, as nominating petitions are turned in. Boland has a history of circulating petitons for various positions at one time, never offering a clue with 100% accuracy which office he will run for. My bet is he stays put.
I think that's a safe bet.
Billy - no body can every figure Boland out.....
the only calls for Boland to jump in the Treasurer's race were by people eyeing his seat (Porter etc.) - the people he represents want him to stay
Gianulis is supporting Alexi, not Mangeri. He will be at Alexi's announcement in the QC on Thursday, December 14 to show his support.
