Republicans looking for 36th District challenger

The Springfield State Journal-Register's Bernard Schoenburg writes about state Republican's looking to field a challenger to Senator Mike Jacobs.
Seeking foe for Jacobs

The three GOP candidates for U.S. House from the 17th Congressional District have been approached by Illinois Senate Republican leaders to consider switching gears and running against state Sen. MIKE JACOBS, D-East Moline.

Jacobs was named to the seat to replace his father, former Sen. DENNY JACOBS, in February.

The elder Jacobs, considered the father of riverboat gambling in the state, is now a lobbyist.

"He’s in an appointed position," said PATTY SCHUH, spokeswoman for Senate GOP Leader FRANK WATSON of Greenville. "And we do not have a shortage of candidates willing to take on Democrats across the state because no one likes the direction this state is going."

BRIAN GILLILAND of Aledo said he has spoken with Watson and Sen. TODD SIEBEN of Geneseo, an assistant minority leader, about a possible run for the Jacobs seat.

"I told them I’d do whatever the party wants me to do," Gilliland said.

JIM MOWEN of Rock Island said Sieben called him, but he’s not interested in running for the state Senate seat. He said he’s "absolutely motivated" to run for Congress, and he thinks Mike Jacobs is "100 times less beatable" than incumbent U.S. Rep. LANE EVANS, D-Rock Island.

ANDREA ZINGA of Coal Valley, who took on Evans in the 2004 general election and thinks she is building momentum for 2006 because voters know her from that race, said she, too, was asked about the Jacobs race.

"For the last dozen years, my passion has been for this district and this race," Zinga said, and she thinks Evans is politically vulnerable. Still, she said, she wants to be involved in public service, and "I would never say never."

Sen. Jacobs said he would look forward to the opportunity to compare and contrast ideas with a GOP challenger.

"I’m a middle-of-the-road person," Jacobs said. "I think they’re wasting their time and effort."

Of three congressional districts that include parts of Springfield, the 17th has the fewest constituents in the city. The Sangamon County GOP’s screening committee heard from Zinga, Mowen and Gilliland this week, but has not yet made a recommendation in the race.
So... Mowen thinks Evans is easier to knock off, Andrea is game for anything, and Gilligan is willing to do whatever the Skipper tells him to do. We'll have to see if Sen. Mike gets his chance to compare and contrast.

Rich Miller asks if this is trouble for Jacobs with commenters offering their views.

Mike can handle a R opponent and can handle a primary. We have experienced some growing pains with the younger Jacobs, but he will learn and grow into an effective Senator. The pushing and promoting of the Riverboat to its new location, and the economic boost that will bring, and 1,000 new jobs from Triumph, I can overlook a few stupid statements from an over-eager young politician (Rosa-Parks, Madigan complaints). I'd rather have someone make a mistake in an attempt to actually do something around here, then anyone afraid to do anything. Action over stagnancy anyday for me. Let the kid see what he can do.

WHAT!!!!!!!!! Senator Jacobs supports the hog slaughterhouse?

But it will lead to noxious toxic pollutants leaching into our watertable, polluting our rivers and killing our streams!!

I thought just the other day Jacobs was the champion and defender of our blessed and sacred waterways to the point of pushing emergency givaways to Shafer's Fisheries in order to protect them!

What the hell? Why the flip-flop??

Wrecking the waterways with carp is bad bad bad, and the taxpayers need to fork over $900,000 dollars to wealthy interests right away.

But wrecking the waterways with noxious toxic pollution from a slaughterhouse and the factory concentrated hog farm operations which will spring up to serve it is A-OK because....??? That's right boys and girls, because it serves some wealthy business interests.

What a phoney hypocritical bunch of crap.

Maybe the plan is to get rid of the carp by just polluting the rivers to the point that nothing can survive?

That's right bash Mike now....
One project really has no bearing on the other. Triumph is a farmer co-op, famers historically have been the first environmentalist. They will do their best, and Triumph has done their best to be a good neighbor, in St. Joe, MO, and elsewhere. The impact of 100-160 construction jobs (Union jobs)for two-three years in this area, and the peripheral jobs around this plant is a tremendous boon for EM, and upper RI County. Progress sometimes brings conflict, this is inevitable. Congrats to Mayor Thodos, Sen. Jacobs, Thom Hart, on this project.

Jacobs should worry -- if he hadn't been appointed, with his disaterous PR and stupid comments, he would have never been elected.

The guy hasn't a clue......and the Republicans smell blood.

It's obvious that both sides are sensing weakness in Jacobs. The nepotism really turned off a lot of people. We need a strong candidate to emerge from our district. My vote is for Rumler. Smart young democrats are the future of the party. Illinois could be a powerhouse with Obama leading the way.

Change for the worse is never to be desired. An attitude that all change is good is an ignorant attitude, as is a blind attitude that anything that creates jobs, no matter what the costs, no matter who eventually holds the jobs, and no matter if the jobs are low paying with no benefits and will only attract illegals.

A job is a job, and what is wrong with a job that pays $12 an hour if you have no college degree. What else is beating on EM door? Anything??? If you are so against illegals working at these factories than why isn't the real issue why we as a country allow all our atm's, automated voice machine's, newspapers, and every thing else to be done in spanish. Illegals????? since when has our country cared about illegals. Call your president getsmart. Lets fight your real issue of illegal immigrants.

Those are fighting words to the people who want this hog operation!
Take away illegals and they have no business! They absolutely rely on them as no rational person who lives in the area, at least the ones without a crack habit, would voluntarily work at one of these hell-holes.

At least they couldn't attract enough to staff the entire place, and the turn-over would be amazing.

Don't take away illegals or the wealthy will crucify you.

Well, I'd say Rumler is way ahead of Jacobs, as by his early twenties, he's already gotten hired on merit by three congressman, including the minority whip of the congress.

Jacobs, by contrast, has never held a job that he got by merit, hasn't been elected to office even once, and may be looking for work soon.

However, it's certain that he'll be giving some cushy patronage position through his Dad's clout. So we needed worry about his welfare.

He truly is the George W. Bush of Illinois... with the difference that Bush actually won elections.

Jacobs has had absolutely NOTHING to do with bringing the Triumph plant to East Mullette. That "accomplishment" was all our realtor mayor - John "where have all the jobs gone" Thodos!
The only accomplishment Mikey J. can point to in the whole Triumph situation - is that he was able to polarize and energize the opposition to the project single handedly with just a couple of idiotic statements to the media!

"East Mullet"? ... laughing my ass off... that's too perfect.

Carey Mirocha and Dennis Ahern ran for office because they needed jobs! (anythings a move up from night watchman eh ?)

Rumler is running because he knew Rosa Parks - and Mikey Jacobs is no Rosa Parks! :)

We can't afford to have that happen. We can't afford to have Mike blow a general election by saying something dumb.

Is O'Brien a Republican or a Democrat?

Due to his age I'm suprised Rumler isn't going to Iraq to get some trigger time so he can run for congress.
Like the rest of these "fighting Dems" buttholes!

Why was it dumb?

To anon who wants to beat up Rumler...get a life you moron. Your posts (and I bet you are again Usher or Mike Jacobs) are clearly a cheap way to try and demean your opponent.

To the other anon - I am sure Pat O'Brien is a Democrat. He was a Democratic delegate on the 2004 ballot for Gephardt and he's an elected Democratic Precinct committeeman - and would have run for Mayor as a Dem if the City hadn't changed the world and made the Municipal elections non-partisan.

Millers blog has a lot of negatives on Jacobs. Does Denny know how much trouble they have??
