Bush war doomed

Eugene Robinson keeps it real in the Washington Post:
The administration is losing the public debate because of its many missteps and failures, but also because of its insistence on conflating the war in Iraq with the larger "war on terror." Does anyone understand what "war on terror" means? The country was attacked by a murderous association of Islamic fundamentalists led by Osama bin Laden. Last we heard, he was still alive and well, probably in some cave in northwestern Pakistan. That's a long way from Iraq.

The president says that Iraq is a test of our nation's resolve, that anything less than victory will confirm the enemy's view that America lacks the stomach for a fight. But "stay the course" doesn't play as a strategy when the course seems to lead nowhere. What is victory in Iraq? When will we know we've won? When the simmering, low-level civil war we've ignited sparks into full flame and somebody takes over the country? When a new government in Baghdad declares its eternal brotherhood and friendship with Tehran?

The mess that George Bush and Co. have created in Iraq doesn't have an unmessy solution. Murtha's plan -- just get out -- isn't really attractive, but at least it's a plan. The saying goes that when you're in a hole, the first thing to do is to stop digging. But the president, like the optimistic kid in the old joke, just keeps burrowing deeper into the pile of manure, even though by now we can be pretty sure that there's no pony down there.

Thanks to Atrios for the catch.

Once again the Democrats look weak and divided.
They should have stuck together last week when Murtha made that announcement.
Hillary Clinton's re-election is more important, I guess than Iraq.
She keeps saying that we cant get out of Iraq. Thats what the Republicans are saying!
Karl Rove, Rumsfeld and Cheney really have thought this 'War on Terror' thing out pretty well!
Starting a war with a Pearl Harbor type attack on American soil was very ingenuis! The Democrats have been clueless on how to respond ever since!
And we really don't have an enemy to fight. Who? The peope of Afghanastan? The people of Iraq? Oh yeah the supposed terrorists!
Dick Cheney wants war indefinetly. It's a good way to hold onto power!

If Bush's kids were over in Iraq I doubt he'd feel this was a "...test of our Nation's resolve..."

We just enacted law to cut the Pell Grants ensuring that there will continue to be tons more young people with the military as NO other way to get a college education. A college education has proved to be the only way to have a job above minimum wage and have a chance to support a family in the US....

The ugly circle perpetuated by the wealthy and powerful continues.

It's been said that Bush and his ilk are turning this country into a banana republic.

It's actually true. The ruling class and the drones.
The income gap between those at the top and those at the bottom is ever increasing and stands at a remarkable level. The middle class is vanishing.

And in the face of this, the Republicans continually target government programs which benefit the middle and lower classes for draconian cuts while insisting on further enormous tax breaks for the very wealthiest with an absolutely creepy almost religious zeal, refusing to even recognize reality.

They've been bought and paid for, and by God, they're going to do what the investor class paid them to do. When you buy a Republican, as the saying goes, they stay bought.

Dope you are right -- after all the rich and powerful need the drones to work at McDonalds and Subway and bus the tables at the Ritz so they can enjoy time away from their "stressful" existence running the world and making sure the stocks pay the right dividends and of course that they entertain the correct elected officials etc etc.....

IF we all had the proper education, who would do the little daily tasks?? The cost to employ smart people for the work would cut into their vacation get away funds!!

I have often wondered how hard can it be to find a rather tall thin middle eastern terrorist with a dialysis machine attached to him??

They can find Saddam in a hole in the ground and not find Osama.....

They must not really be trying.
