Stockwell, Bayne withdraw
The field of Democratic candidates hoping to replace U.S. Rep. Lane Evans on the November ballot continues to shrink.Bayne noted that his recent trips to Romania, Bulgaria and Macedonia had prevented him from participating in candidate forums and he simply didn't have time to woo committeemen.
Hal Bayne, a retired oral surgeon from Taylor Ridge, announced Thursday he is withdrawing. He contacted 17th Congressional District Central Committee co-chairman Don Johnston to tell him.
Macon County Auditor Amy Stockwell announced her withdrawal Wednesday. She endorsed John Sullivan, a state senator from Rushville.
Still in the race are Mike Boland, state representative from East Moline; Phil Hare, Rep. Evans' district director from Rock Island; Rob Mellon, a teacher from Adams County; Mark Schwiebert, mayor of Rock Island; and Mr. Sullivan.
Oddly, Mr. Bayne would've cast his endorsement for Ms. Stockwell if she hadn't withdrew.
"Stockwell was the best candidate," Mr. Bayne said, noting her fiscal policies and opinions on foreign policy. "When I look at the slate now, I am concerned."

Approximately 4 or 5 months ago I blogged on here and said, keep an eye on John Sullivan from the southern part of the 17th Congressional District. Well, I am glad that Sen. Sullivan is in the running; he "can" win the general election, hands down. I hope that he is selected by the precinct committeemen and women. He is a very good person, and he will represent the districts' values above and beyond. Good wishes for Sen. Sullivan.
Bayne, the former Republican candidate, dropped out of the Democrat race - I bet all the Democrats are quite upset!
Unless one of the RICO Dem's take a seat (which likely non will), Sullivan seams to have a free pass. He will kill Zinga - possibly by a margin every bit as great as Evans in 2004, but a liberal/ moderate fight will be set up for the 2008 primary!
Sullivan needs to just give up and run as a Republican. I told him personally that's his best option if he wants to be truthful to himself and the voters!
Sullivan is no more a Republican than John McCain is a Democrat. Get over it. He's a moderate Democrat who has every right to run on the Democratic Party's banner as anyone else in the party.
We've got to get over this litmus test bullshit that will rip our party into shreads. You should JUST LIKE the fanatical RIGHT WING when they attack liberal Republicans for being too liberal.
Let's put up a big tent and let's go out and recruit more Democrats from rural areas and let's take it to the Republicans. You have no right shutting the door on good, rural Democrats. Shame on you.
Phil Hare's support seems stable; I'm from the southern part of the district, and he's got my vote.
It is shown to be that the chosen one, Phil Hare will be elected. The towo most qualified people for the job just left the field. This is all part of the plan that came down from on high. Lane Evans has spoken and it shal be written that on the third day that Evans will shine his light upon the chosen one. Phil Hare. Phil Hare is a true brother to Evans and you will get more of the same quality leadership from Phil Hare as you did from Lane Evans. Thank heavens for Phil Hare.
Hare today, gone tomorrow?
I recently attended a local parade. The route was just over 2 miles long and there were 149 entries. Senator Sullivan was the 7th group to travel the route. Upon completing the route (zig-zagging back and forth to shake hands) he turned around and walked the sidewalks in the opposite direction all the while shaking hands. When he reached the beginning point of the parade Our local Democrat Sheriff's group was just getting started. Senator Sullivan put on a T-shirt with the Sheriff's name on it and walked the route with our Sheriff and his group.
My point being, Here is a person that will work his tail off to get himself elected and will go out of his way to help other Democrat candidates and officeholders do the same.

Just because Hare is fat doesn't mean that he is not a good candidate.

I want Phil Hare for my congressman not some rich farmer or some arrogant lawyer like Mark S - or some guy who can't decide what to run for - like Boland.
