So who thinks they're smart?

This is an oldie but goodie...

Three people went into a Quad City restaurant and had a nice meal. The bill came to $30.00, and they decided to just split the bill evenly. They each gave $10.00 to the waiter and he took the money to the cashier.
But the cashier noticed that they'd been overcharged. The bill should have been $25.00. So she gave the waiter five $1.00 bills and told him to return the money to the diners.
But the waiter was a crook, and he stuck two of the bills in his pocket and gave the diners back three bucks.
So each of the three diners had paid $9.00 for the meal, which comes to $27.00. Add the two dollars that the waiter pocketed, and that comes to $29.00.
Where's the missing dollar?

  1. The room didn't cost anything.. if that's what you're supposing.

    But methinks you've got it.

  2. Yup, they paid $9 each which totals $27 - $25 that's with the cashier plus $2 in the waiter's pocket.

It's the way the problem is stated at the end that misleads. When it says each diner paid $9 that includes what the waiter kept. So it makes no sense at all to add the two dollars a second time.

The final paragraph should really read: "So each of the diners had paid $9.00 for the meal, which comes to $27.00. Substract the two dollars that the waiter pocketed, and that comes to $25.00 which is exactly what the cashier has for the cost of the meal.

Don't be stupid. Really, don't be stupid.
Stop. Reread your comment. Does it make sense?
Are you making something up out of thin air in order to attack me with it? Reading something into a post that's clearly not there or even implied?
Then don't bother posting. For that matter, if that's the case, don't bother coming back.
