Ground broken for new Moline libary

Ground was broken Wednesday on the $10.1 million dollar library in Moline.

The 68,000-square-foot library will be located just south of the city's current Southeast Branch on 41st Street. It will be three times the size of the branch and will include meeting rooms, a coffee shop and room for future expansion.

A $2.5 million capital campaign will fund equipment and furnishings, architectural and other professional fees, and other contingencies. Several sizable donations, including $250,000 from the Moline Foundation, the largest received, were announced at the groundbreaking.

Now that the first shovel has turned, Moline Mayoral Candidate Pat O'Brien should support the new library.

If nothing else Mr. O'Brien, a ton of Republican cash will end-up in the hands of your old union (the Laborers).

From my perspective, that alone is reason enough for O'Brien to support the effort.

The Dope pondered when the last vote was taken on this project just what benefit O'Brien could have gotten from being the lone vote against.
Of course, the deal was done, the time for principled opposition was over, there was no profit in making a stand.
But perhaps he felt principle was worth hanging onto to the bloody end. Yet I still find myself scratching my head over that one.
